Pollokshields is unlike almost anywhere else we work. West of Shields Road you have the wide leafy avenues of grand Victorian villas around Maxwell Park, St Andrew's Drive and Glencairn Drive; to the east, the dense red-sandstone tenements of Strathbungo and the streets running off Albert Drive and Nithsdale Road. The windows could not be more different from one house to the next, which is exactly why off-the-shelf blinds so rarely do them justice.
The villas tend to have tall, generous sash-and-case windows, deep bay returns and the occasional arched or splayed head that needs a shaped shutter rather than a square one. Much of this is conservation-area housing, so the windows are protected and often original. Our shutters fit inside the existing opening and leave the period sashes completely untouched.

The tall sash-and-case windows in the villas around Maxwell Park and St Andrew's Drive suit full-height shutters in our larger 89mm or 114mm blades. The wider louvre keeps the proportions right on a big window and lets plenty of light into those high-ceilinged rooms.
Arched & Shaped Heads
Plenty of Pollokshields villas have arched, splayed or otherwise non-square window heads. We template these by hand and make the shutter to follow the curve, so a feature window stays a feature rather than being squared off and spoiled.

The sandstone tenements off Nithsdale Road and Marywood Square have the classic three-facet bay. We measure each facet separately and make the panels to suit, so they close cleanly on the angles, with tier-on-tier an option where you want privacy from the street below.

My house is in a conservation area. Can I still fit shutters?
Yes. Internal shutters sit inside the room on the existing opening, so they do not change the outside of the building and leave your original sash-and-case windows exactly as they are. They are one of the few window treatments that work happily with protected period frontages like much of Pollokshields.
Can you shutter an arched or shaped villa window?
We can. The arched and splayed heads you find in the bigger Pollokshields villas are templated by hand and the shutter is made to the exact shape. It is more work than a square window, and we will explain at the visit which part can open and which is a fixed shaped panel.
The villa windows are huge. Which blade size is best?
On the tall sashes common in the Pollokshields villas we usually recommend our wider 89mm or 114mm blades. The larger louvre keeps the look in proportion with a big window and gives a clearer view out, where a narrow blade can look busy. We bring samples so you can compare in the room.
How long does it take, and is parking a problem?
Most of Pollokshields' avenues have driveways or easy kerbside space, so access for the measure and the fit is rarely an issue. The tenement streets near Strathbungo are tighter, so we plan around them. Once measured and your style and finish are chosen, your shutters are made to measure and we return to fit; being a southside firm we keep the timeline tight and give you a real date at the visit.
